We do have unpublished data on the public sector, but the number of respondents is modest -- just 29 top IT executives -- and it's not broken down by federal, state, city, county. With that caveat, we found the average public sector CIO has been in their current position for 4.7 years. More results from CIO Insight's April 2006 CIO Role Survey can be found at http://www.cioinsight.com/article2/0,1540,1950190,00.asp

NASCIO has tracked state CIO tenure for several years for all states, DC and territories. This is unpublished data that we update internally every quarter. The current average is 2 years, 4 months and the median is 22 months. Being a state CIO is a very challenging position.
