New Missouri CIO: show me the infrastructure

Government Technology suggests that the new Missouri CIO has his work cut out. First step: show me the infrastructure. Along with discovering that the state transportation agency had buried fiber, Dan Ross also says he still doesn't have a "handle" on all the technology expenditures in the state. That's one question the private sector always has about state government. What exactly is the size of the market?

The new CIO also has responsibility for policy and operations, which wasn't the case before, so he's better positioned to make change. State members of NASTD - technology professionals serving state government - are the people to consult on infrastructure. And as (mostly) career civil servants, they can provide a valuable historical perspective as well.

Utah recently invested its new CIO with similar powers, a process web logged by David Fletcher, who works in Utah state government, and ex-Utah CIO Phil Windley.
